Proven Effective Treatment for Evaporative Dry Eye

More than 250 patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and dry eye symptoms have been treated with LipiFlow in clinical studies, including 139 patients in a randomized controlled, multi-center clinical trial. Patients in this trial were randomized between LipiFlow treatment and daily use of warm compress therapy as a control. Patients were evaluated at 2 and 4 weeks after initiating treatment. In addition, patients using the warm compress control received treatment with the LipiFlow system (crossover treatment) after the exam at 2 weeks, and were evaluated again at 4 weeks.

The randomized controlled trial showed that patients treated with the LipiFlow System had a statistically significant greater improvement in the average number of meibomian glands yielding clear liquid at 2 weeks as compared to patients treated with a daily warm compress control. This study also showed improvement, on average, in patient self-reported dry eye symptoms at 2 and 4 weeks after LipiFlow treatment.

The graphs below are from a 9-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial conducted in 2009. The results show a mean improvement at 2 and 4 Weeks after LipiFlow treatment in the total meibomian gland score, which measures meibomian gland secretion quality and quantity, and in the total OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) questionnaire score, which measures dry eye symptoms.
